New York City - About Us

Minds Matter’s first Chapter was founded in New York City in 1991 when six Wall Street professionals recognized the need for a mentoring organization that targeted students who had the drive and potential to attend college but who lacked the resources to do so.

To achieve our goals, we reach out to high school counselors, teachers, and students in all of New York City's five boroughs to find students who meet Minds Matter's academic and financial criteria. Our rigorous curriculum and access to resources exposes our students to tools and knowledge to which they might not otherwise have access.

Each student has the benefit of two mentors that, through a selection process, are matched to build strong teams and close-knit relationships between our mentees and volunteers. Since Minds Matter is educationally-focused and goal-oriented, yet geared toward fostering strong relationships with our students, our volunteers not only guide students through the application process, but also provide a deep level of commitment and encouragement.

During weekly mentoring sessions, Minds Matter’s 300+ volunteers help students navigate the summer program and college application processes by cracking the PSAT/SAT and ACT, polishing writing and speaking skills, demystifying financial aid, and building confidence levels – all while forming lasting friendships.

The results? First generation college students attending leading institutions, SAT score improvements of 100 points or more, beaming parents, and proud volunteers with a sense of purpose in this hectic, fast-paced city.
