Portland - Donate

Minds Matter of Portland, Inc. is run exclusively by volunteers. We have no local overhead costs; we are responsible for a small portion of the cost of two paid national staff in New York. Therefore, a very high percentage of your contributions fund student costs that include educational materials for the Saturday classes, educational field trips, and tuition (net of financial aid) and travel for summer college and prep school study programs. Minds Matter is a 501c3 organization. All donations are tax deductible.

Minds Matter budgets $5,000 annually for each of the 31 students now enrolled in the program. Our annual budget for the 2007/2008 school year is therefore $155,000.

On behalf of the students, parents, mentors, instructors, and other volunteers engaged in Minds Matter of Portland, THANK YOU for providing financial assistance that will help our exceptional students achieve the challenging goals they have set for themselves, goals that would not be within their reach without your help.

2006/2007 Minds Matter students, in their own words regarding their 2007 summer programs:

"Thank you for this great opportunity to come to the Putney School. I've really grown a lot since I have been here. I learned about different writing techniques and I learned more about character development."
- Denise writes from the Putney School in Putney, Vermont.

"I'm in New York! It is absolutely amazing here. This city is so different from Portland ; it's like living in an alternate universe…I really like my class (poetry), we've already done a lot of writing…The students here are nice...The campus is gorgeous…it's breathtaking. Thank you guys so much for sending me here, I know the experience will be as great as I expect."
- Akela's impression of New York City and her three week English literature program at Columbia University.

"I am here. I love it so much. I have already had my first class…The substitute for the building robots class was the music engineering class, which has already started. I love it. I have learned a lot… (The Teacher) just puts knowledge out there for me to grab, and I am grabbing away!"
- From an email sent by Miranda to her mentor Kalmia shortly after arriving at Smith College in Massachusetts to attend a three-week summer engineering program.
